Did You Know?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) receives more complaints against credit bureaus than ANY other type of business.

(Yes, they are a business, not a government agency like some people believe)

In fact, in February of 2000, the three major credit bureaus paid a fine of $2.5 million for flat out ignoring consumers’ requests for their files!

Here’s even more startling news …

79% of all credit reports contain errors.

29% of credit reports contain serious errors, false delinquencies or accounts that did not belong to the consumer.

20% of credit reports were missing major credit, loan, mortgage or other information to demonstrate the credit worthiness of the consumer.

26% of credit reports contain accounts that were closed by the consumer, but incorrectly listed as “closed by credit grantor.”

41% of credit reports contain demographic information that was misspelled, outdated or incorrect.

Can you believe that the credit bureaus even turn a profit?

Contrary to Popular Belief, Credit Reporting Agencies (CRAs) Are NOT Government Agencies…

The credit reporting bureaus are publicly traded “for profit” companies. They, like all publicly traded companies, are in business to make money for their stockholders…period.

But that alone is not the scary part…

Some of the biggest customers are credit card companies and prefatory lenders, who BUY their lists of people with less than perfect credit so they can prey upon them, with HIGH interest offers.

So, the credit bureaus, credit reporting agencies (CRAs), whatever you want to call them…actually HELP put you deeper into a financial hole they hope you never dig out of!

It’s a shame.

But, due to the startling statistics we just revealed, the CRAs are heavily regulated … one of the MOST heavily regulated companies in fact.

What can you do about all of this?

Here are a few tips, and the solution that can help you put these solutions on autopilot…

Tip #1 Never, Never, Never Dispute Something Online

Are you one of those brave souls, who has tried this daring feat before? Did it work? That’s OK, I know the answer to that.

Here’s why you never, ever want to do an online dispute on any of the CRAs…

The CRAs have a piece of software, called Oscar. If you go online to dispute a negative or inaccurate item, it does NOT go to the credit bureaus at all.

So, under the law, the bureaus have 30 days to verify a challenged/disputed item with the creditor, right? Then, the creditor has 10 days to respond, verifying the item. If the item is not verified, it must be removed, by law. As you can see by going directly to the creditor, and matching the item reported with the item alleged, they actually know in thirty seconds; not 30 days as they would let you think.

You, of course, won’t know for 30 days, when you get your updated report, thinking they did their due diligence and you’re stuck with the negative or inaccurate item.

Here’s what really happens…the CRA’s computer shoots the dispute to the Credit Furnisher’s computer which then verifies the same problems and inaccuracies they reported the first time.

Crazy huh? It’s garbage in, garbage out!

Another Eye-Opener …
Tip #2 Never, Never, Never Dispute in Writing (Yourself)

You’re probably wondering… “Well, if I’m not to dispute online, the best way has to be in writing, doesn’t it?”Conventional wisdom would suggest so… but keep reading.

Are you still strapped?

If you, an individual, mail a letter to Equifax, Experian or TransUnion … they see it’s from you, not an expert … guess what happens to it?

It actually goes to Jamaica or India directly to a foreign sub-contractor, who handles these annoying disputes, with the fervor and concern of a jack rabbit. It’s not their job to care about you either.

They get paid, based on the number of these disputes they process. Makes my stomach turn every time I think about it. They have about 4 minutes to handle your dispute.

So, if you have 10 items that you’re disputing, they only have a few seconds to deal with each of them.

Insane huh? The people who actually process these are incentivized to “do it quickly”… not to pay attention at all.

How on Earth Can They Effectively
Do This And Get Away With It?

Easy (for them). They simply fire off a form letter, asking for more information, or advise you that it’s some sort of frivolous action or some other stupid reason.

You see, if they don’t meet their numbers, they will lose their contract and it will be given to another outsourced place in Jamaica, waiting in the wings.

Sickening.

Are you shocked enough, yet? Could this really be our America we’re talking about?

It burns a hole in my stomach to know all of this myself. I still get the “creepy crawlies” every time I think about it.
